Agnes Grey

This semi-autobiographical first novel, based on Anne Brontë’s experience of working as a governess, follows Agnes Grey, the daughter of a minister whose family are in financial difficulty. With few choices for employment, Agnes becomes a governess in order to support her family, but she struggles to manage the spoilt Bloomfield children and suffers disdain from the haughty Murray family. As she navigates the precarious world of a governess within Victorian society, Agnes eventually meets the gentle curate, Mr Weston, who offers her love and happiness.
